Mystery has always been a great escape for readers; it tickles the brain and it’s fun to try and figure out the culprit before the main character does. However, the stories that stump you all the way to the last paragraph are the ones that are the most entertaining. This week’s incredible classic is The Dain Curse by Dashiell Hammett.

In The Dain Curse, the Continental Op (the ‘detective’ of the story) comes face to face with quite possibly his weirdest case ever. When he meets Gabrielle Dain Leggett, he notices something peculiar: the people around her die horrible, gruesome deaths. The Continental Op immediately gets suspicious of the horrendous misfortune and begins to think that it’s an inside job.

And, he’s probably not far from the truth. The twists and turns are so shocking that every single moment will keep you guessing. This is a mystery story that has inspired several future generations of mystery writing. It’s an immortal classic. The characters are eccentric, if not a little bit disturbing; this makes them all very unique and real.

The dialogue is strong, and the descriptions of their voices made me feel like I could hear what they were saying in my head.
Hammett doesn’t disappoint. He never really did, anyway.

Modern day mysteries pale in comparison of the classics that started it all. The last portion of The Dain Curse has such a shocking revelation, that it’ll hit you like a freight train. If you’re a fan of intrigue and incredible twists, this book is the right one for you.
