The ongoing saga between the Denver Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler has apparently reached an impasse as the team leaked word today they will try and trade the Pro Bowl signal caller. No matter which side you are on in this puzzling chain of events, one thing is for sure with Cutler: Buyers beware.
The Broncos have made a slew of mistakes with how they handled this situation and new head coach Josh McDaniels has certainly shown his lack of experience taking over the reigns in Denver. Even owner Pat Bowlen holds some accountability here, first, firing Mike Shanahan and apparently promising Cutler the offensive coaching staff would remain in place.
However, this saga falls on the strong arm of Cutler and his very fragile ego. Cutler heard of trade rumors earlier in the year and threw a temper tantrum when his name became involved in some of the talks. Now, this isn’t Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, this is a guy who obviously has a lot of talent but has done nothing at this point in his young career. Remember, even Joe Montana was traded and Cutler is too juvenile to understand the NFL is a business.
There are a slew of reports out there about teams lining up for Cutler’s services and the New York Jets are towards the top of that list. Now if Cutler is so easily hurt, imagine if he was playing in New York for Rex Ryan. Ryan is a guy who wants to run the ball and play defense. Cutler is a gun slinger and wants to throw the ball all the time. Do you think he could put the team before himself and adapt to a new system where he isn’t required to throw the ball 35 times a game? Imagine the New York media getting a hold of Cutler on a bad day and what might come out of his mouth if he decides once again to act like a child.
While teams will drool over his upside, they would do well to remember how combustible this guy really is. It’s not like Denver is the Lions or Bills, this is a high profile team with a history of success. He would have had the chance to follow John Elway and go down in Broncos history if he could even half way match what Elway brought to the table. He decided that wasn’t important, he wants to be wanted, coddled and treated as untouchable in a league where that is not realistic. Almost no player in the NFL is beyond the reach of being expendable.
Now McDaniels should have know better before trying to get Matt Cassell from New England, but can you blame the guy for looking at other options. Denver is a bad team right now, but it’s a proud organization that probably won’t be down for too long. Cutler apparently has no time to be there for his teammates or coaches during this transition and if he goes to another team will probably be the same type of player. If your quarterback is a “me” guy, that usually ends up in disaster. Your leader has to take control of the team and in that respect, is the main person to handle all the distractions during an NFL season. Do you see that playing out in New York? No way.
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Cutler is now trying to do damage control but it's too little too late. He’s denying that he ignored calls and text messages from the team, saying he never received any communication. Sure, we all know how unreliable our communication tools are these days. Yes, that was sarcasm.
Cutler may have all the tools to be a great quarterback, but buyers beware, this guy’s ego is a big as his arm and if he can’t handle the situation in Denver, it will only get worse wherever he goes. Someone will take this guy, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
