Super Bowl XLIII

With the big game just days away and new memories about to be made, I have taken a look back at the top 5 Super Bowl moments of all time.  Let me know your take on the selections or if you have any plays to add to this incredible list.

5.) Goal line tackle: Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta matched the high powered St. Louis Rams against the Tennessee Titans in 1999.  This game was all about the tackle made by Rams linebacker Mike Jones against the Titans receiver Kevin Dyson.  With six seconds left to play and St. Louis leading by seven points with the Titans threatening at the 10-yard line, Jones made a sprawling tackle on Dyson just short of the goal line as the receiver tried to stretch an extra couple of inches to break the plane to tie the game.  Dyson came up just short as the Rams became champions.

4.) The Drive: This is the game that put Joe Montana into the category of legends with the 49ers beating the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 for Montana’s third Super Bowl win.   Montana rallied San Francisco from a 16-13 deficit with only 3 ½ minutes left in Super Bowl XXIII in Miami.  The Bengals needed only one stop to take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy but instead Super Joe took the 49ers 92 yards in two minutes, 46 seconds by completing eight of ten passes for 97 yards and hit John Taylor with a 10-yard touchdown strike with 34 seconds left for the victory.

3.) Wide Right: The Buffalo Bills are arguably the best team to never win a championship after getting to the big game four years in a row.  Their first loss no doubt stings the most and Bills fans will forever remember Scott Norwood’s 47-yard missed field goal attempt that went wide right against the New York Giants.  The kick in Super Bowl XXV in Tampa that dashed the Bills hopes of a championship will live in Super Bowl lore forever.

2.) The Leap: We see it all the time in highlight reels and just imagine if we had the television coverage that we do now to see the entire play unfold.  The Steelers win against the Cowboys in Super Bowl X in Miami by a score of 21-17 was etched in lore after Lynn Swann leapt in the air to corral a Terry Bradshaw pass for a 64-yard catch coming down at the five yard line and then running into the end zone.  The play defined Swann’s career and will always be regarded as one of the best plays in Super Bowl history.

1.) The Escape and The Catch: You can pretty much put “The Leap” and “The Escape” as one and one A or even reverse the order but this play gets the nod as two players made miraculous efforts to make this highlight one to remember.  We all know the back drop, the undefeated New England Patriots were only a couple of minutes away from a perfect season before Eli Manning and the Giants took the ball down the field with a Manning pass to Plaxico Burress in the final 32 seconds to win the game.  However, it was a 32-yard third down conversion that will live forever in Super Bowl history.  Manning somehow managed to escape a band of Patriot defenders as they grabbed his jersey, legs, helmet and anything else they could get their hands on before the QB miraculously spun out of trouble, backed up a few yards and unleashed a bomb down the field to a leaping David Tyree.  Tyree somehow managed to out jump Rodney Harrison and pin the football to his helmet as he was pulled to the ground and somehow managed to keep possession and the drive alive. This not only defined Manning and the underdog Giants, but made Eli an icon for this miraculous play.

Enjoy the game!!
