While Brett Favre is sure to go down as one of the best quarterbacks of all time, he has to finally take the high road and retire. I don’t think I can endure another “summer of Favre” where he has more twists and turns than an episode of Lost.
Let’s be clear, Favre made the right choice coming back to lead the Jets and early on it worked out. However, by the end of the year, his body broke down and the interceptions went up with New York choking down the stretch to miss the playoffs. Now don’t get me wrong, his 2007 season with Green Bay was nothing short of outstanding when he passed for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns. But remember, he had a poor 2006 season and it wasn’t a huge stretch to think his time with the Jets would see the signal caller regress to years past.
The Packers were 100 percent correct to go with Aaron Rogers after suffering through a summer of back and fourth drama with Favre. Not once did I feel Favre was treated unfairly, he basically held the team at ransom and then retired only to un-retire and start a media firestorm in Wisconsin.
The Packers, to their credit, held firm and told Brett he would come in as a back up. Translation, “We have had enough, time to go.” So on went the summer of Favre when we had to endure day after day of speculation and where the future hall of famer would end up. The destination was New York and the media frenzy began all over again.
Point blank, he was nothing more than a glimpse of his former self with the Jets and as a matter of fact, it may be the reason New York didn’t make the playoffs. He had his moments, but there is a reason his teammates were so vocal right after their final loss of the season.
Anyway, this isn’t to question his talent on the field, it’s to warn him about his legacy off of it. Other than fans in Green Bay, people are tiring of the whole Favre drama and in what has become a yearly ritual, his decision to play or retire. Favre must love attention, he must crave it or else he would have put any speculation to bed right away. Instead we may be in for another summer of retiring, tearing up at the podium, ESPN highlights of all his past accomplishments and players and writers giving their opinion of the Packer great.
Then after the dust settles, he may come out and change his mind and start the 24 hour news coverage once again. If Favre wants to go out revered and as one of the best players of all time at his position, then he finally needs to have some integrity and call it quits for good. And do it now!
I think we are all fortunate to have seen him play, but the drama is more for Melrose Place then football. Hopefully he doesn’t need the attention and decides to make the right choice, and most of all make it quickly. Please Brett, don’t hold us hostage again this summer, we all have plans.
