AFC East – New York Jets – 2007 Record 4-12: 3rd place AFC East
Unless you live under a rock, the Jets made the biggest splash in the off-season by acquiring Brett Favre from the Packers. The mayor has already given him the key to the city and Jets fans see another Joe Namath in their new signal caller. Favre had an excellent season last year, bouncing back from a lackluster 2006. The Jets hope they get the Favre that brought the Packers to the NFC Championship game and bring this team to new heights. However, still standing in the way are the New England Patriots and not even Brett Favre will get the Jets past the Pats this year. However, it should make for more intriguing games against their rivals who as we all know are still ticked off about head coach Eric Mangini blowing the whistle on spygate.
The Jets have streamlined their offense for Favre but in their preseason game against the Giants problems popped up all over the field. A touchdown was negated because of improper alignment at the line of scrimmage and Favre didn’t manage one touchdown against the World Champs.
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is known as an innovator but with Favre still learning the offense will probably have to hold back some things in the playbook until this team gels. Favre is an exciting sub plot to the season and in my opinion will probably be good enough to get a couple of more wins just based on him being the quarterback. However, New York is not Green Bay and any losing streak or one bad game and Favre will find himself thrust into a spotlight he has never seen before. New York fans can turn in a minute and Favre’s true test will be how he handles the massive media scrutiny.
On defense, the Jets feel they have the pieces in place to be effective in the 3-4 defense. David Harris is a prototypical 3-4 inside linebacker and the Jets expect veteran Calvin Pace and rookie Vernon Gholston to make contributions. Gholston’s job is to get to the quarterback from his outside linebacker position and cornerback Darrelle Revis and strong safety Kerry Rhodes are potential Pro Bowlers expected to anchor the secondary.
Prediction: 3rd AFC East
Playoffs: The Jets have their best chance in years to make the playoffs but even with Favre it won’t be enough in 2008. Favre has to make the transition to New York but if he’s successful doing that the Jets should compete for the entire year.
