AFC East – Miami Dolphins – 2007 Record 1-15: 4th place AFC East 6-10
6-10. That is the best outlook for the Dolphins as they welcome in the Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano era. Miami has looked good in the preseason defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road and blanking the Kansas City Chiefs at home. The fins just gave Ricky Williams a contract extension and he has looked very good at this point. Chad Pennington has been named the starter and will at least bring some stability to the offense after their quarterback carousel from a year ago. Pennington was solid against the Chiefs completing 11 of 15 passes for 94-yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Ted Ginn has also performed well and the Dolphins are hoping to see a huge jump in productivity this year. This team has not gone to the playoffs in six years, a team record, but that trend won’t end this year. The Tuna usually takes about two years before he turns teams around and after a 1-15 campaign, not much can be expected.
Parcells raided his former team the Cowboys including his new head coach Sparano and draft guru Jeff Ireland as the new Dolphins General Manager.
Offensive coordinator Dan Henning runs a play-action pass, power running style and with newly drafted left tackle, Jake Long, the Dolphins future does look bright on this side of the ball. Pennington is a stop gap but should provide some buzz when they play the Jets this season. Ronnie Brown and Williams will be counted on in the running game and if both stay healthy it could be a very good tandem.
On defense, coordinator Paul Pasqualoni inherits a run defense that was the worst in the NFL last year allowing 153.3 yards a game. Ireland brought in ex-Cowboy Jason Ferguson to anchor the 3-4 defense, and Tennessee Titans’ defensive tackle Randy Starks. Linebacker Reggie Torbor comes over from the Giants along with Akin Ayodele to firm up the other areas of this porous unit. Gone is fan favorite Zach Thomas after an injury plagued 2007.
Sparano is a tough nose coach who will put his mark on this team right away. Parcells believes that building from the inside out is the way to win and the Dolphins have done just that is this first rebuilding year. However, I can only be as optimistic as giving the Fins a 6-10 ledger this year and that might be to optimistic. I believe they will be competitive however and Dolphin fans have to sit tight a bit longer before they see the affect Parcells will have.
Prediction: 4th AFC East
Playoffs: No, not going to happen, no way.
