Tuesday Tidbits: Juicy Restaurant News
The recession may have hit hard but the Austin restaurant scene is continuing to grow. Here's a list of hot spots that are newly opened or opening soon:
- The Texas Cuban is a trailer in the 1500 block of S. Lamar. Another trailer, you ask? Not just any trailer, this is your go to spot for a garlicky Cuban pork sandwich replete with cheese and pickles. The fried plantain chips are the perfect side to this traditional sandwich. Website coming soon.
- Gourdough's Big. Fat. Donuts is in the "hurry up and wait" period of opening an establishment in Austin. The menu is tantalizing, not your average bear claw or cake doughnut. Gourdough's offers up creations such as the Flying Pig (bacon with maple syrup icing), Dirty Berry (fudge icing with grilled strawberries), and the Mother Clucker (fried chicken strip with honey butter icing). Located next to Austin Brevita at 1219 S. Lamar Blvd, look for this trailer to open soon. Their website is under construction.
- The Fork N Icehole is firing up the East side with debate over the unappealing name. Burgers, beer and pizza is the concept for the old Gene's New Orleans Style Poboy storefront, 1209 E. 11st Street.
- Another East side restaurant, Justine's, is getting mixed reviews. Their escargot is said to be exquisite yet they need to work through opening jitters, namely the horrendous wait for entrees and a heavy hand with the salt. Read about the highs and lows posted by Austin Chowhounds and Yelpers.
