The doors are shuttered, lights are off and all is quiet at the two locations of The Kitchen Door, a bakery and deli that's served Austin for 35 years.  Loyalists are already leaving messages on the website's guestbook, lamenting the end of the best chicken salad sandwich in Austin.

Owners Joel Baldazo and Christopher Breed issued an e-mail statement to customers saying "This was not a decision we wanted to make but one we simply couldn't avoid" and cites the rising operating costs.

The statement ends with a heartfelt  "I hope you all know how much you all affected our lives and we hope that the memories you have of The Kitchen Door will also last you a lifetime. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You."
