Whether you're looking for bread or bran muffins, a soup-and-sandwich lunch or strawberry-rhubarb pie, you'll find it at Somerville favorite The Biscuit.
Formerly affiliated with Toscanini's, this bakery-cafe has struck out on its own, and bakes its scones, muffins, pizzas, breads, cookies, frittatas and more daily, and with a very few exceptions, excellently.
Reach for one of their savory scones, in flavors like the delectable pear-gorgonzola, cheddar and caramelized onion (the bakery's most popular savory-scone offering) or feta and spinach. They make for a great twist on the usual breakfast fare.
If you're in the mood for something sweeter, try any of the sweet scones except the lemon - the lack of fruit chunks in the center makes the pastry itself come off dry, and the glaze on top is over-sweet.
Though it's not exactly a bakery item, let me highly recommend the soups, in particular the borscht. This Russian favorite is executed perfectly, and goes great with a simple bread roll.
In fact, one of the few baked goods you can't find multiple variations on at The Biscuit is...biscuits. Go figure.
