Some of the best coffee on the North Shore can be found not at a coffee shop at all, but at a little bakery in Salem called A&J King. This European-style bakery uses fresh local ingredients to create their unique fare, but I’m more interested in the espresso.
I’ve stopped at A&J King numerous times for breakfast, and when I do, I usually get their latte or cappuccino. Be warned: if you get a cappuccino here, you will receive a cup mostly full of foam. However, at the bottom of that cup will be some of the most delicious-tasting liquid this side of Rome.
In fact, the espresso drinks you’ll find at A&J King have more in common with the stuff you’d get in Rome or Paris or Vienna than what you’d get at your local Starbucks. We’re talking about traditionally prepared espresso combined with just the right amount of hot milk and served in small café-style portions. They may not have a huge assortment of blends or fancy, single-origin beans, but what they do have is technique. This should not be understated.
Service is friendly and the store is always clean. And, since it is a bakery, and a good one at that, you can count on some delicious baked goods to go along with your coffee. Or the other way around if you prefer. I also award extra points for simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, good for iced drinks) along with the sugar and sugar substitute.
If you want to pick up some freshly baked bread, which I also recomend, stop by early (before 10am) for the best possible selection.
Find A&J King at 48 Central St. in Salem.
