Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
The impending birth of Manny (Ray Romano) and Ellie’s (Queen Latifah) new baby has the herd in a bit of a quandary. Diego (Denis Leary) is have a bit of a mid-life crisis, trying to figure out whether he’s still a carnivore or if he’s lost his edge while Sid (John Leguizamo) feels his own biological clock winding down. A change encounter with three (apparently) orphaned eggs sets the stage for some serious adventure when it turns out Sid’s adopted brood are baby T-Rexes. And things get decidedly out of hand when Mama T-Rex shows up and wants her babies back.
Sid ends up in a subterranean rainforest where all the dinosaurs that should be extinct still roam. Hi-jinx ensue as Manny, Ellie, the possums, and Diego link up with a Crocodile Dundee-esque weasel named Buck in order to rescue the sloth from the Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Buck, it turns out, though quite resourceful, is a bit off his noggin; driven to distraction by a Moby Dick Dino named Rudy … ooooh, scary! And, of course, there is the complication of Ellie going into labor in the land of the lost.
I liked Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs more than I expected to. True, the franchise sacrificed focus on relationships to focus on special effects, but that’s the Ice Age we live in. There were still plenty of touchy-feely moments and sweet messages about the power of love, the value of friendship, acceptance of those different than we, and a surprisingly powerful affirmation of adoption.
And then there was Scrat, the long-suffering saber-toothed squirrel that has become this generation’s Wile E. Coyote. Instead of chasing, but never quite catching the roadrunner, Scrat pursues his beloved acorn and ends up suffering Wile E.-sized indignities for his trouble. The addition of a love interest for Scrat in this outing didn’t help much, but still, it’s Scrat so it’s all good.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is rated PG for some mild rude humor and peril.
The DVD includes a commentary track, short films, and several making-of featurettes.
