My Life in Ruins
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
I didn’t see My Life in Ruins on the big screen, but I enjoyed Nia Vardalos’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding, so even though I was warned this was a light-weight film, even as romantic comedies go, I thought, ‘What the heck. How bad could it be?’ Turns out, pretty bad.
The story follows Georgia (Nia Vardalos), a teacher with a passion for Greek culture and history, who is desperately trying to get a job as a university professor. In the mean time she works as the most boring tour guide for what must be the least reputable tour company in Greece. Her boss is trying to drive her to quit, the tourists she is force to accompany are obnoxious, grumbling, drunk or larcenous, she hasn’t had sex in six months and her tour bus driver is an exceptionally hairy guy by the name of Poupi (pronounced, “Poopie”) Caca. If just saying the name sends you into paroxysms of laughter, then this is the movie for you. If not, well, that’s about as funny as it gets.
There is some lovely Greek countryside to enjoy, but apart for that, and the poopie jokes, My Life in Ruins has nothing going for it. Poorly written, poorly directly, only serviceably acted by such talents as Richard Dreyfus, Rachel Dratch, and yes, Nia Vardalos, the overriding message of the movie seems to be, no matter how bad your life looks, if you can just find someone to have sex with you’ll be fine.
The DVD includes three commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and an "Everybody Loves Poupi" featurette.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
