Legend of the Seeker: The Complete First Season
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Inc.

I didn’t catch the inaugural season of Legend of the Seeker on television. Although I’m a fan of the Sword & Sorcery genre I never read the “Sword of Truth” series by popular author Terry Goodkind upon which the series was based. But my oldest daughter (age 26) confessed she had been following the series and had gotten hooked on it, so I thought I’d give it a shot when the Season One came to DVD. I like TV on DVD. Not only do you skip all those pesky commercials, but you don’t have to wait until next week to find out what happens next. I’ve discovered some of my favorite TV series on TV on DVD including Burn Notice and Firefly. Will Legends of the Seeker join them?

Perhaps.

The series has some powerful juju going for it. Production values are high, special effects are quality, the acting is good, and the storyline follows the novels closely (a big plus for fans of the books). Even if you are not familiar with the novels it is not hard to get caught up in this cosmic battle between good and evil. It’s got wily old wizards, brave knights in shining armor, dastardly villains, beautiful maidens with low-cut bodices (always a plus), and a fresh-faced hero that is half Frodo Baggins and half Luke Skywalker.

On the down side (and there is always a down side) the Sword & Sorcery genre has a tendency toward the hokey that can become problematic if not handled carefully. If would be easy for Legend to become another Xena: Warrior Princess. Yes, there are some hokey moments, but thankfully these are held to a minimum. Viewers also need to dispense with the idea that we are looking at Earth during its Medieval period where everyone speaks in King James English. This is an alternate reality where anything can happen.

Shot on location in New Zealand, Legend of the Seeker looks great. In addition to all 22 episodes from Season One, the five-disc DVD collection also include plenty of bonus materials including interviews with the cast, deleted scenes, a featurette about the development of the series and a conversation with author Terry Goodkind.

Legend of the Seeker: The Complete First Season released October 13, just in time to get prepped for Season Two which commences this November.
