High School Musical 3: Senior Year may not be your cup of Kool-Aid if you are over the age of 13 and not female. But for the target audience it might just be the best movie ever made.

Disney’s incredibly popular High School Musical franchise pulls out the stops on this big screen edition which boasts a budget that is bigger than the combined working capital of the first two films combined. The result is a movie that is also better than the first two films combined: better songs, better dance numbers, better story line, better everything. Quit rolling your eyes – believe it  or not, High School Musical 3 is actually more than just a pretty good movie for the kids. It is a opportunity for adults to remember what it felt like to be a kid in love for the first time, without all the cynicism, expectations, and baggage attached.

Reality? Forget it. HSM3 has no more to do with reality than the old Frankie and Annette beach movies did in the ‘60s. But com’on – it’s a musical for crying out loud. I’m pretty sure street gangs didn’t burst into song before a rumble like they did in West Side Story either.

The story line is the simple, classic, bedrock tale of Boy Meets Girl. Boy Loses Girl. Boy gets Girl back. What makes this musical sing is the chemistry between the long standing cast, particularly Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens as the young lovers, Troy and Gabriella. Ms. Hudgens is the picture of youthful innocence while Efron is moving beyond teen heartthrob into serious leading man mode. His brooding good looks and torn loyalties recall Leonard Whiting in Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Major kudos to sidekick Corbin Bleu as well. His junkyard dance duet with Efron was great fun to watch, as was his obligatory basketball dance number.

Best movie ever made? Naw, probably not. But you could do a lot worse.
