Here's a rendering of a potential RX-8 successor from Andrus Ciprian, a Romanian design student and man with an eye towards the spiff.
It's called the RX-Z, and while its lines are nice, they are slightly reminiscent of the Panamera. Only it's shorter. Other than that, the only real issue I can see proportion-wise is the rear doors. There's really no point to them, considering that it looks like the front seat would have to be folded forward anyway. Conclusion? Make it a coupe. A GT kind of thing.
According to Ciprian, the goal was to create "a link between fossil fuel cars and more ecological ones", which somehow justifies theoretically ditching the rotary in favor of a 3.0 liter diesel V6 hooked up to two electric motors and a start/stop system. No rotary means no RX. Period. An MX? Absolutely.
There are definitely some cool attributes other than the better-than-the-RX-8 lines, like the front-to-rear moon roof and the possibility of going two-tone. Then there's the one bit that really stands out beyond the rest, and that would be the rear end.
The tail light cluster is something extra fancy. It's more of a taillight entertainment system; between the lights is a (presumably) LED cluster that would present any number of messages created by the driver.
As for the diesel mill, well, a diesel rotary hybrid could definitely make a statement. Even as an option, or perhaps in a specialized model. Hell, why not a concept, for crying out loud? Perhaps this RX-Z isn't as perfect as some would like, but Ciprian's work is yet another example of quality design existing outside the realm of monstrosities like the Honda Crosstour and Subaru Legacy. Those cars were designed by people hired by Honda and Subaru. And they got paid money.
