My little family: DJ (4) and James (2) loving life!

I always thought that my job as a mother was to teach my children and mold and shape them into the people they ought to be. I never imagined that they would teach me more than I could ever teach them.

This weekend, I was rushing my boys out the door (late, as usual!) and my 4-year old took off running around to the back side of our apartment building. I was calling him to come back while trying to coax my 2-year old out the door and feeling more frazzled by the second. Suddenly, my 4-year old got to the edge of the courtyard and just froze in his tracks.

I figured there must be a dead animal or a steaming pile of dog poop or something equally disgusting in the courtyard, he is a 4-year old boy after all. These are the things that normally grab his attention. My first reaction was to yell, “Whatever it is, DON'T TOUCH IT!! I'll be there in a minute.” He just stood frozen and kept saying, “Mommy, come here...you have to see this!”

When I finally got my younger son out the door and got the door locked, I went to see what had the older one so engrossed. I didn't see anything. Then he pointed at the sky and with all the amazement of a 4-year old, he said, “Look, Mommy. It's a whole new day. Isn't that AWESOME!”

For all of my stress and worry about how I'm going to get everything done in the time I have, how to be the perfect mother, regrets about the mistakes I've made, worries about the future, I completely missed the point. This is a whole new day. It can be whatever we want it to be. It doesn't matter what I messed up yesterday or last week or last year...this is a whole new day.

I'd love to hear your stories about the lessons you've learned from your little ones!
