Even better than getting a proton pack for Christmas in 1987. Well…almost.
Story: The game takes place after the first two Ghostbusters films. In a nice touch the game opens up like a movie. You play as a rookie who is hired on by the Ghostbusters to test out dangerous new gadgets. You unfortunately picked the wrong time to start. Gozer seems to be back up to his ghostly tricks. The Ghostbusters get pulled into a ghost filled adventure with many familiar locals, characters, and ghosts. The story is great and truly feels like you are playing the sequel to the films. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd return to write the script. Having the original screenwriters back really adds to quality.
Gameplay: This is one of those games that let you live out one of your childhood fantasies. The game is simply a blast to play. You move around in third person with the nunchuck. With the Wii remote you control your proton stream and blast away. Being the team’s newbie you will also get upgrades to your proton pack with new kind of weapons.
You have to hold the stream on the ghosts to wear them down. Once they are worn down you have to use timed Wii remote flicks to daze them. Once they are dazed you can move the ghosts over to a trap. The ghost busting feels really good. My only complaint is that sometimes during the fighting it can be hard to tell if you are hitting the ghost, as there is no lock on. Getting the hang of wearing down the ghost and then trapping them can be a bit awkward at first. Once you get the controls down it is very rewarding.
In between fighting ghosts you use your PKE meter to scan enemies, items, and hidden objects. These slower parts help break up the ghost sequences without destroying the games pace. The A.I. Ghostbusters accompany you through most of the game. They will interact with objects and have conversations, advancing the plot in real-time.
The Ghostbusters also assist you in the fights. They will attack the ghosts with you and give you advice in battle. If you or the computer allies are near death you can heal each other ala Gears of War. Even though they are with you in the game they won’t beat the game for you. Unlike other games that heavily rely on an A.I. partner (Resident Evil 5), the Ghostbusters don’t detract from the experience. Their main purpose is immersing you in the experience.
Another welcome addition to the Wii version is split screen co-op. Spit screen is a feature that has been phased out of modern games. There is something really fun about sitting next to someone and playing a game. I hope this game can start a new trend.
Graphics: The PS3 and 360 versions of the game have a realistic look. The Wii version took the smart approach and gave the game its own unique style. Being a fan of the old Ghostbusters cartoon I approve.
Sound: The soundtrack to this game is very good. The music just feels like Ghostbusters. The sound effects for the ghosts and proton streams are spot on. The original cast returns to voice their respective characters. Hearing the real Ghostbusters throughout the game really adds to the entire experience.
Verdict: There is a ton fan service and care packed into this game. If you are a Ghostbusters fan leave the house right now
and buy it. I think the fact that this is game was not based on an existing movie really helped it. You can tell how much care was put into doing this franchise proud.
This game is basically The Ghostbusters 3 we never got. Because it is story driven the game is not that long (5 to 9 hours). While short this game's a great example of quality over quantity. It is also worth mentioning that you can nab the Wii version at a much cheaper price than the HD versions. It is retailed for 39.99. The price and the controls make this version of Ghostbusters a must buy for me.
