If the fall weather is creaping you out and you just can't wait for the spring season to kick in, it may be time to thnk about a spring fling to Gothenburg, Sweden, the second largest city in the country and it really gives the traveler a great alternative to Stockholm...not that you need one, both cities are truly amazing. We spent a few days to G'burg and the surrounding area a couple years ago and just loved it. It's a great walking city and really easy to rent a car if you want to explore the surrounding areas. The Swedes are among the most friendly and most beautiful people in the world, just ask my flight attendent sister (in law) who's really seen the world. Read on for what Gothenburg is putting together for spring 2010.
Exhibition of Three Renaissance Rivals. Master works by the Italian Renaissance artists Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael will be displayed in a first-time exhibition next spring in Gothenburg, Sweden. The exhibition, 'And There Was Light,' will open at Eriksbergshallen exhibition hall on March 20, 2010, and run through August 15, 2010, as part of its world tour. Due to the rarity of exhibitions dedicated to these monumental artists in addition to the complexity of organizing their prized and priceless works, 'And There Was Light' is a highly anticipated event. This exhibition will include both the original works of art from the late 15th century and 16th century, as well as sketches, models of inventions, and copies of statues.
In their lifetimes, da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael were fierce rivals competing for both commissions and fame. Although they have achieved immortality as being several of the world's greatest artists, their visionary ideas reached far beyond the realms of art. An international team of experts from the world of Italian art and culture organized 'And There Was Light'. The team includes some of the world's leading specialists in Italian Renaissance art, who have worked on high-level international art and culture projects for decades. Their resumes are impressive and they possess the knowledge, experience and unique contacts required to create an interesting, large-format showing. The artistic director for the exhibition is the internationally renowned da Vinci expert, Alessandro Vezzosi. The scientific director is Francesco Buranelli, the Vatican's vice minister of culture and former director of the papal museums.
Eriksbergshallen is located in a former shipyard area, on the northern banks of Göta River in central Gothenburg. For more information on the exhibition visit: www.and-there-was-light.com
