The classic monsters are coming back with a vengeance. In addition to The Wolfman, ShockTillYouDrop.com has obtained some of the concept art for the upcoming I, Frankenstein.
The movie will be based on the comicbook series of the same name which was written by the Kevin Grevioux who also had another one of his ideas turned into a movie franchise--Underworld.
The original Underworld was a hit because it took classic monster myths (vampires and werewolves) and mixed them together. Unfortunately, it suffered by the second movie and the third might not as well have been made.
This Frankenstein interpretation will not be the introspective, somewhat depressing story given to us by Mary Shelley. Hers was a philosophical monster questioning its creator. The indication from ShockTillYouDrop may be that this new Frankenstein will be kicking some ass: "...going by the guns he's carrying in the cover to upcoming comic book, we don't expect him to play patty cake with them."
I don't have any objections to a reinterpretation. I'm a little tired of classic monsters being turned into CGI fluff with so much action there's no story though. This time around it will be film noir combined with monsters--that sounds promising.
Here's the pitch according to Ain'tItCool.com: "What if Frankenstein's monster developed to the point where he was able to function as a hard-boiled private investigator? And what if his noir-ified universe included The Invisible Man, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dracula (as a crime kingpin, naturally)? This is a movie you'd pay to see, right?"
So I would say as long as Stephen Sommers is not involved (Van Helsing had promise, but was horrid), we could be looking at the next generation of classic monsters brought back into the pop culture mainstream. Nothing is ever dead, even when it is undead.
BTW: if you want to check out some of that new concept art, ShockTillYouDrop has the links to several pieces.
BTW2: And FearNet, from an earlier article has an exclusive interview as well as art from the actual comicbook.
