Cat got your - never mind
J.F. O'Neill Packing Company, based in Omaha, Neb., has recalled roughly 33,000 pounds of beef tongue processed between July 1 and Oct. 8, 2009 because many of them may not have had the tonsils completely removed. The problem with that? Tonsils are known to carry the defective protein which is responsible for infecting cattle with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as BSE and Mad Cow Disease, as well as other infective agents such as viruses and pathogens. Consequently, the USDA requires the tonsils to be removed during butchering to reduce the spread of BSE. That didn’t happen, evidently, and the company is now recalling more than three months worth of product. The tongue was sent to distribution centers in California and Nebraska, and sold under the following labels: A.D. Rosenblatt, Austin Meats, Brand Advantage Wagyu, Brand Advantage Partners, Grassland Beef, Imperial Wagyu Beef, J.F. O’Neill Packing Co., Kobe Beef America, Montana Ranch Brand, Morgan Ranch, Premier Protein Partners, Whole Foods Natural, Whole Foods Organic, and Yamaya U.S.A. Additional information

Ground beef recalled
San Diego Meat Co. has recalled 925 pounds of bulk ground beef and ground beef patties after a sample tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the meat was distributed primarily to caterers and restaurants in San Diego County, although the California Department of Public Health has released a list of markets that may have carried the meat, as well. Additional information

Sandwiches recalled in North Carolina

Fisher/Rex Sandwiches, which are sold in convenience stores, gas stations, and other retail outlets in the Carolinas and Virginia, have been recalled because they may contain Listeria monocytogenes. A routine inspection by North Carolina officials found the bacteria in test samples. Additional information
