Within the last several weeks, I heard a bear story out of Avery, CA, north east of Murphy, CA, on California State Highway 4, that scared me in-a-way.
A resident of that area, decided to take his dog for a walk along a trail that he has used many times. He and the dog started out walking, the area was cool, the trail was empty, and it was a nice day to be walking on a mountain trail.
When he came upon a manzanita bush, a full grown black bear stood up on its hind legs. According to the resident, he knew he was in serious trouble when a bear cub ran to the other side of the trail, putting the mama bear on one side and the baby bear on the other side and him in between.
When he saw the mama bear, the only thing came to his mind, I was told, was to run, which he did. When he sensed that the bear was close to him, the resident dropped to the ground, into a ball, and he laid there holding his breath and did not move. When the resident went to take a breath, the mama bear slapped him. The resident did not move, and just laid there, where the mama bear stood for several minutes and then, for some unknown reason, just left.
When the resident stood up, the bear was gone. Looking down a small hill, near the trail, in front of him, he could see the cub running, but there was no sign of the mother bear.
The resident, quickly, called his dog and both left the area. The resident said that the bear left him, scratched, bruised and scared.
