"Sandy! Do you smell smoke?" I said to my wife, while she was watching TV. "No, I don't." she said. I opened the sliding glass door wider. "Do you smell it now?" "No!" she said. But the smell seemed to be getting stronger. I was ready to ask her again, but she said,"I smell it now---it smells like wood burning in a fireplace."
"Sandy, who would be burning wood in a fireplace---it's to hot for a fire this time of the year. Should I call the fire station about the burning smell of wood...?"
Before I finished the sentence, we could hear the fire trucks. We looked out the back door and saw smoke pouring out of the rafters of a house.
Should I have called the fire station when I smelled the smoke? If there was no fire, I would have felt like a stupid-fool for panicking the firemen about the smell of smoke. If I did call, would the firemen stop the fire before it burned or destroy some ones property? The question is: What would you have done?
Talking to several people, they all said that I should have called. The firemen would have come out and investigate the cause of the smell of smoke. It's what our taxes pay them to do---prevent fires the best way they can by tracing down the smell of smoke. It's one way of preventing a full-blown fire.
So what do you do? Call the fire department, when the oder of smoke is in the area, or wait until you see flames?
