There are standard stories told during Halloween, like the story of "Bloody Mary", which was made up to scare children. But the story of a young hippie girl thumbing a ride on Mission Street in San Francisco,CA, is very interesting, how true it is, I do not know. This is the story that I was told, when I was teaching school in San Francisco.
Some time in the late sixties , or early seventies, a young girl with long black hair, long flowery dress, and black shoes was thumbing a ride on a dark, cloudy Halloween night, about 11:00 P.M. to San Jose. A black car stopped and the driver offered her a ride, according to several witnesses. When the car went down Mission Street to Army, it turned left, and headed towards Highway 101. For some reason, the car crashed into a light pole and the girl was killed---the driver ran off and disappeared, so the story goes.
About thirty minutes later, the corner arrived and loaded the body into their vehicle and left the area. When they went to take the body out, it was gone.
Now, every Halloween night people say the girl is standing on Mission Street thumbing a ride to San Jose. Those who have picked her up, to give her a ride to San Jose, have said that she disappears after they make the turn onto Army Street.
But if go back to Mission Street, she's there thumbing a ride. This goes on all night long: They say that "She's looking for the person who picked her up that Halloween night." so the story goes.
Therefore, if you are on your way to San Jose and you pick up a hippie girl with long black hair, a long flowery dress, and black shoes thumbing a ride on Mission Street, don't panic if she is not in your car after you make the turn onto Army Street. If you believe this story, take warning, and if you don't, have a happy Halloween.
