Do you know where the "2009 Halloween Safe-Street," in your community, is located?
For example, Foster City, CA, is having their safe-street on Blythe, Bainbridge, and Decatur Streets: enter via Farragut Park.
So, what is a safe-street? They are designated streets where children of a city, town, or community can go and parade around safely in costume after dark. There are local volunteers watching the streets to make sure the people on the safe-street are not molested, harassed, or attacked in any way.
Years ago, many children would have gotten hurt by older children, or adults, who think it's cute to give little children a bad time on Halloween night. To prevent this, a group---in Foster City, it is the Foster City Rotary Club---would sponsor these streets to make sure that an area is safe for the children to parade around in costume.
So, in your community, look in the local paper, listen to the radio, and watch TV to find out where your safe-street is located.
One thing to remember: There will be many people walking around, after dark, going tricker-treating from house to house. If you are driving a car, it is your responsibility not to injure anyone with your car. Also remember, to look over all the candy that the children bring home for tampered candy or food: razor blades have been found in apples; hot pepper has been put on gum; needles have been found in fruit, etc. If you suspect something is wrong with the candy, fruit, or food that your child got during ticker-treating throw it away.
"Happy Halloween, have a safe one."
