Trot for Laurel's needy and homeless

Laurel, MD - 13 November 2009 Although there are still 14 days until the start of the CarMax Laurel Toyota Turkey Trot, 86 people have registered online and almost 90 people have mailed in their registration forms for the fifth annual 5K run and 1-mile walk to benefit LARS [Laurel Advocacy & Referral Services]. According to Nancy Graham, LARS' executive director, 'Experience shows us that most people register the day before or day of, but this is by far our best start ever.'

Runners will trot away from the balloon arch starting gate at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 26, Thanksgiving Day. The course is USATF certified. Walkers depart at 8:05 a.m. on a local 1-mile course. Registration for the run/walk continues. There will be walk-up registration and packet pick-up from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 25. On race day, late registration will open at 7:00 a.m. Registration for both runners and walkers is $25.00. Register online HERE or print a form to mail in HERE. After the race, there will be refreshments, race results and prizes.

CarMax Laurel Toyota is this year's race sponsor. Some of the other sponsors who are contributing to this event are: The City of Laurel, Councilman Thomas Dernoga, The First United Methodist Church of Laurel and the Laurel Lions Club. LARS provides various services to the homeless and others in need in the Laurel area. With the steady rise in unemployment in the area, the charitable organization has seen a rise of more than 35% in the number of requests they have received for food, shelter, and financial assistance for rent, utilities and prescriptions.
