National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, ongoing in November. The Alzheimer's Association is asking for your support and as a “thank you” gift for donations received in October, donors will receive a special limited-edition 2009 white wristband with purple lettering to wear during November. Donations help to advance programs and support for Alzheimer's patients and their families and to advocate for more research into this disease. Donate online.

Anne Arundel County Volunteers - Nominations are being accepted through Monday October 19, 2009, for the 2009 Volunteer Project Hall of Fame Awards. Sponsored by the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County and the Coordinators of Volunteers of Anne Arundel County, [the awards] will honor volunteer projects that have had the most impact in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis. Members of the Laurel PD will spend 31 hours up on the roof in an effort to raise donations for 10,000 Maryland Special Olympics athletes. Stop by and help the officers reach and exceed their goal of $5,000. Donors to Cops on Rooftops receive a Dunkin Donuts coupon for donuts and coffee. Music, moon bounce and other entertainment will be ongoing.

More active supporters can participate in a 2-mile walk from the American Legion Post #60 [2 Main Street] to the Dunkin Donuts and back. Federal Duck Stamp National Judging, Friday, October 16th & Saturday, October 17th, 2009 The judging of the nation’s oldest, most prestigious wildlife art competition – the Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest – is free and open to the public. The winning design will be made into the 2010-2011 Duck Stamp. In addition to enjoying the waterfowl art, visitors can explore exhibits and trails. Refuge habitat tram tours will also be available.
