Ever since hitting shelves for the first time in 2000, the NHL 2K Series has been battling against EA’s NHL series. As of late EA has been winning the “true simulation” game battle and it appears that 2KSports is fine with that by embracing their “arcade style" gameplay.
To be honest, NHL 2K10 feels virtually the same as last year’s NHL 2K9. Admittedly, the controls are a bit tighter and playing defense is a bit more fun, but the gameplay is pretty much the same. You control players with the left stick and use the buttons to shoot and pass on offense and on defense you use the buttons to check an opponent and attempt steals. The game is very easy to get a handle of and I think 2K did that on purpose. It seems as though they're targeting casual NHL gaming fans who just want to skate, score, knock people off their feet and occasionally get into a fight.
Of course the same modes from last year are back: Quick Game, Season, Franchise, Playoffs, and Pond Hockey. One of the biggest revamps is online play where you and some friends can create your own team and take it online and challenge other players with ease.

Graphically the game looks good, even though some of the animations are a bit rough. But the recreations of the coliseums, rinks, and game introductions are nice to look at. The music ranges from hip-hop to rock and the announcers Drew Remenda and Randy Hahn do a decent job but there’s a lot of repetitiveness.
If you want a hockey game that you can automatically pick up and play with hardly a learning curve, NHL 2K10 may be right up your alley. But if you’re looking for something a bit more in-depth, EA’s NHL 10, may be a better choice.
