The Games Convention is going down in Germany right now and there are a ton of announcements coming through. One of the biggest is Sony's introduction of the 160GB Playstation3. The new PS3 will be bundled with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a voucher for the Playstation Network game, Pain, and a DualShock Wireless Controller at $499.99 and will hit stores in November. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99 MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.
"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."
And while the 160GB PS3 comes with the Blu-ray(TM) Disc player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, and Cell Broadband Engine(TM), there was no announcement that it was backwards compatible with PS2 games. Has Sony given up on that?

Sony also announced that they will be releasing a new Playstation Portable this fall known as the PSP-3000. The new system will be bundled with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, and feature a new LCD screen with anti reflection technology and a built-in microphone for multiplayer options, Skype calls, the film National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, a voucher to download echochrome and a 1GB memory stick.. There will also be a bundle that will feature the PSP-3000 with a 4GB Memory Stick, and a voucher to download Everyday Shooter. Both bundles are priced at $199.99 and will be available on October 14. The new PSP will also be available as a stand-alone system for $169.99 later this year.
"As we head into the holiday shopping season, both of these new Entertainment Packs represent a significant value for gift-givers, combining the updated PSP and its enhanced screen with content that showcases the PSP's gaming and entertainment functionality," said Peter Dille, senior vice president, marketing and PLAYSTATION Network, SCEA. "The 4GB Memory bundle is geared toward the digital entertainment enthusiast who likes to bring their media files on-the-go and download content from the PLAYSTATION Network. The Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters bundle is a great family-friendly option centered on one of the most beloved PlayStation franchises."
