Final Fantasy IV: 4.5 out of 5

Square Enix has been doing a superb job on its remakes of its Final Fantasy classics and Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS is no exception. For those of you who have never played FFIV, which was originally released in 1991, you play as Cecil, a commander of the Red Wings, a sort of Air Force. After he questions his king’s attacks on innocent people to acquire crystal that hold power, he’s stripped on his rank and sent on a meager mission. But on this mission, he discovers that he has a mission of his own – to save the world. What else would you expect? The folks did an excellent job of remaking the game, which is now in 3D, with voiceovers and excellent graphics pushing the DS to its limit. And yes, the CGI cut scenes are the best you’ll from any DS title. The game play stays true to the turned-based battle system, but updating with a current gen feel. Although the game might be a bit difficult, it’s definitely one of the best role-playing games on the Nintendo DS.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen: 3.5 out of 5

While Square Enix has been taking care of its Final Fantasy franchise by remaking then original games for the Nintendo DS and PSP, it seems that the popular Dragon Quest franchise is getting the port treat. Dragon Quest IV came out in the early 90’s in Japan but was remade for the Playstation and that’s the version we seem to have on the DS. Even though the game still has the same graphics, some of the dialogue has been reworked to make a pretty good story and the game play is still fun to this day. Of course the story follows a hero, which you get to name and his crew as they try to save the world. Yes, it’s nothing new, but still, it’s like a reading a great, classic story - it’s always great to go back and read again and again.

The Legend of Kane 2: 3.5 out of 5

Yet another remake from Square Enix, The Legend of Kage 2, is actually a sequel to a game made in 1984 and remade for the Wii a couple of years ago. At the beginning, you have two characters to choose from, Kage who wields a sword and throws stars, and Chihiro who rolls with a chain and scythe. Each character has their own “story,” but their goal is the same – to save the Princess. So you basically run through the levels taking out ninjas on your way to boss fights at the end of the levels. After you complete a level you gain some new “techniques” like being able to throw multiple stars or perform a sliding kick. Although the game feels very repetitive, hardcore retro game heads will love the game play and look of the game.
