May is already chock full of star-studded events for the sake of NYC's animals.

This weekend, Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan kicks off the North Shore Animal League’s 36-hour-long Adoptathon 2009, where hundreds of cats and dogs will be up for adoption.

Later in the week, Broadway diva and passionate animal advocate Bernadette Peters will lend her starpower at the Bideawee gala at Tavern on the Green.

If you want an excuse to walk your pooch around the city for a good cause, head to Queens on Saturday for Bobbi & the Stray’s Walk4Paw benefit beginning at Forest Park, and on Sunday, the annual Dogswalk for Cancer, in Riverside Park.  Mid-week, cat lovers can mingle at the “Cinco de Meow” benefit for Earth Angels Rescue.  You can always adopt an animal at the NYC Animal Care & Control Shelters.  www.nycacc.org.

North Shore Animal League’s 2009 Adoptathon
Through Sunday, NSAL adopters will have a selection of more than 700 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats. In addition to gaggles of animals, there will be lots of activities, including raffles, a pet psychic, and experts to offer training and veterinary advice. For more info go to www.nsalamerica.org.

Join Bobbi & the Strays in the first annual Walk-4-Paws to save homeless animals! Prizes include gift cards from Steve Madden ($500!), Doctors Foster and Smith, t-shirts, etc. You can walk as an individual or as a pack (two or more people) with your dogs on their leashes. You can also join the walk without a dog, or course!

American Cancer Society: 18th Annual DogsWalk Against Cancer

The American Cancer Society is excitedly preparing for the 2009 DogsWalk Against Cancer. Hundreds of people and their pets, vendors, and entertainers will convene in Riverside Park for contests (Dog Owner Look-A-Like, Best Costume), Doga (dog yoga) demonstrations, a Camp Bow Wow training, live music, and much, much more! Dogswalk fundraising efforts benefit the programs of the American Cancer Society as well as the Donaldson/Atwood Cancer Clinic at the Animal Medical Center. You and your dog can join the fight against cancer by registering or volunteering today. The registration fee is be $50 per person.
