I'm a sarcastic human being. I'm like Ralphie's dad from A Christmas Story, he dabbled in obsenities, I dabble in sarcastic quips like artists work in oils. My quirky sense of humor usually get laughs from the adults around me. The kids not so much. Why? Because kids don't get it.

Sarcasm is truly lost on anyone under 7 and any kid over that age can learn to resent it. Sometimes sarcasm can be seen as teasing or dismissive by kids. They want to be taken seriously and when they don't get the joke it can be hurtful.

And if you're the prime example of linguistics in your home you're helping to develop your child's sarcastic tone, which is really helpful out of a 9 year old. See?

So, join me as I work really hard to leave the sarcasm for adult conversation and allow our kids to develop their own sense of humor and dry wit through later life experiences.
