This is the weekend for dance! On Friday October 2nd and Saturday the 3rd, the Velocity DC Dance Festival at the Sidney Harman Hall will feature two days of spectacular dance. About a dozen local companies and several national ones will participate in this first annual event which is modeled after New York's very popular 'Fall for Dance' Festival. The organizers of the event wanted to cultivate a new dance audience by keeping the ticket prices relatively low, $15.00. Tell me where else can you see The Washington Ballet, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Ron K. Brown and Evidence, Gesel Mason, Helanius Wilkins' Edgeworks, City Dance Ensemble, Urban Artistry, Bowen McCauley Dance and more for less than the price of a movie ticket and a tub of popcorn? The shows start at 7:30 each night at the Shakespeare Theater's Sidney Harman Hall at 610 F Street, North West in the historic Penn Quarter neighborhood. And for you night owls who can not make the 7:30 show on Saturday, they are offering a 10:00 late night show. The theater is accessible by subway. Take the Metro Red Line to Chinatown/Gallery Place stop. For tickets or more information you can call (202) 547-1122 or toll free (877) 487-8849.
If $15.00 is too rich for your blood, both evenings begin with a free special appearance by Austria's most famed choreographer, Willi Dorner and a host of DC dancers that will turn the “streets of Penn Quarter into a dance floor" by climbing, crawling and suspending themselves over passer-bys on a moving “body trail.” The show begins at 5:30 at the Archives/Navy Memorial Metro Plaza at 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue North West.
