Since first hitting the baseball card scene back in 2006, Topps’ Allen & Ginter baseball has quickly become one of the most popular products on the market. It is one of the rare products that seems to appeal to almost every type of baseball card collector. Topps recently pulled back the curtain on the 4th installment of the brand, 2009 Topps Allen & Ginter. Based on what I’ve seen and read about it, I think that this year’s set has the potential to be the best one yet.
2009 Topps Allen & Ginter will feature a 350-card base set that includes 230 baseball veterans, 30 rookies, 25 historical figures and 15 world champions. The set will feature 50 short printed cards. Among the many new faces debuting in this year’s set are Vincent Van Gogh, General Custard, Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, and Brigham Young.
This year’s Allen & Ginter release will be packed with more hits than ever before. Each 24-pack hobby box of 2009 Topps Allen & Ginter will feature a combination of any three of the following:
· Rip Cards
· Autographed Cards
· Cut Signatures
· Relic Cards
· Printing Plates
Along with these three hits, each hobby box will contain one box loader. These are not your average box loaders either. Among the potential box loader pulls are cards autographed by Super-Olympian Michael Phelps
One of the more highly publicized inclusions in past Topps Allen & Ginter sets, DNA Hair Relics, is back for more in 2009. Collectors will have the opportunity to pull cards bearing the genetic footprints of famous historical figures such as Napoleon, Richard Nixon, Edgar Allan Poe, and even Beethoven.
A brand new Ginter code for collectors to decipher will also find its way into the upcoming release. And it is here that the set gets a little strange. This year’s code will be included in the Creatures of Legend insert set that includes the likes of mythical creatures such as The Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.
Another questionable inclusion in the set is the debut of the World’s Biggest Hoaxes, Hoodwinks, and Bamboozles insert set. This poorly conceived set will feature scam artists Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff alongside Enron, The Runaway Bride, Cold Fusion, and The War of the Worlds. They will be joined by an additional hodge podge of criminals and institutions that don’t deserve their freedom, much less commemorative trading cards. During this period of economic turmoil and financial hardship, the last thing I want is a trading card of one of the scum bags responsible for fueling the fire. Something tells me that there will be dismembered Bernie Madoff cards circulating around ebay on more than one occasion. Heck, maybe I will even join in on the fun.
All and all the good appears to far outweigh the bad in 2009 Topps Allen & Ginter. Here is a sneak peak at the set to help pass the time until the set is released in late June:
