So, this afternoon it was brought to my attention that IGN had announced that there was a thirteenth episode of Dollhouse that would not be aired. They explained that the season finale entitled “Omega” would only be the twelfth episode. Suddenly I was very confused. I was certain that FOX had ordered thirteen episodes. It seemed reminiscent of the Firefly situation, until I read on. Eventually I had to check Eonline and What’s Alan Watching to verify the facts, as I was rather confused and extremely uncertain.
Here’s the deal: FOX ordered thirteen episodes including the pilot. The pilot was filmed, but then scrapped and eventually used for parts in later episodes. Still that pilot and the twelve episodes that will be aired leading up to and including “Omega” fulfill the network’s agreement with Whedon and company. However, according to Tim Minear, 20th Century Fox needs 13 episodes for DVD, and the original pilot can’t be included because the footage has been used elsewhere in the season.
The end result is that the episode “Epitaph One” was created to full this need. It is a stand alone episode that was created specifically for this purpose, though Minear thinks “…Fox should air it because it’s awesome.” However, it was never part of the agreement, and so the episode’s fate remains in the air.
For panicking Whedon fan’s there is some assurance to be had. Whether or not FOX airs this episode says nothing about the fate of the show. Nothing has been released saying that the show is being dropped, though it has not yet been picked up for a second season. So it looks like we’ll just have to keep watching and waiting.
