Sky Saxon (born Richard Marsh) lead singer and bassist of the
California-based sixties psychedelic garage band The Seeds died Thursday, June 25 in an Austin hospital from an undisclosed illness. Saxon was in his sixties (his actual birth year is not known).
The Seeds had a Top 40 hit in 1967 with Pushin' Too Hard, a song later covered by the Monkees. They also had success with Can't Seem To Make You Mine which was recently used in a commercial for Lynx Bullet and spawned a number of cover versions including those by The Ramones and Garbage. In 2000 their song Mr. Farmer was included on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's film Almost Famous.
Saxon collaborated with Billy Corgan in 2008 and appeared in the Smashing Pumpkins video for Superchrist. Living in Austin now, he had been performing with his latest band Shapes Have Fangs. Saxon's last performance was a short set on Saturday June 20 at Antone's.
A memorial for Saxon will be held Sunday, July 5 at 6 pm at the Scoot Inn in Austin, Texas. Other memorials are being held in Los Angeles, Northern California, and in Sky's home state of Utah.
