A lot of people would like to see Roman Polanski's head on a platter, Cokie Roberts included, now that the wily director is in Swiss custody for the 1977 rape of then 13 year old Samantha Geimer.
Wait, who the heck is Cokie Roberts?
Born Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs (the Cokie does seem to make perfect sense after all that), she is a senior news analyst for NPR News and political commentator for ABC News.Read more on Cokie here.
Cokie's analysis of late includes her now widely circulated comments on Mr. Polanski, the juiciest bit being, "As far as I'm concerned, just take him out back and shoot him."
I am guessing Cokie is not a fan. Yes, the 1986 Pirates was pretty bad.
In all seriousness, there is no justification for having sex with a 13 year old girl. I wonder what Jack Nicholson has to say about all of this? It was in his house that all the trouble started in the first place. I am sure no comment is the standard answer.
Read the incredible 36 pages of grand jury testimony (be warned, strong stuff) for yourself.
Let's look at the high's and low's:
Roman Polanski: His mother killed in a Nazi concentration camp. His actress wife, Sharon Tate, killed by the Charles Manson gang in 1969. We would have to be inhuman to not sympathize with the man at this point.
1977: Convicted of statutory rape of 13 year old girl and flees to France to avoid prosecution. Sympathy vote pretty much goes out the window.
Hated and revered at the same time, managed to win The Oscar for Best Director for film The Pianist in 2003. No one had yet managed to take the man out back and shoot him.
Cokie Roberts: Holds more than 20 honorary degrees, at least half of them from the NRA. Did not direct really cool movies like The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) or The Tenant (1976), pre-rape time.
Also, did not cut Jack Nicholson's nose in an excellent scene from Chinatown. Hey, that was a pretty tough 5'5" guy in that movie!
A 'Living Legend' according to The Library of Congress. Inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame.
Big fan of Switzerland.
