Betsy Markey is the Democratic candidate running against Republican incumbent Marilyn Musgrave in Colorado's 4th Congressional District. She got her start in government in 1983 when the State Department recruited her to serve as the Director of Computer Security Policy, assessing the threats and vulnerabilities of classified computers.
In 1986, Markey and her husband started the internet business Syscom Systems, with Markey serving as CEO and CFO. By 1996, the company was cited by Inc. magazine as one of America's fastest growing companies.
In 2001, Markey founded the Northern Colorado Democratic Business Coalition, which helps small business owners get their voices heard in local government. From 2005-2007, she served as United States Senator Ken Salazar's Regional Director for northern Colorado, working mainly on constituency issues.
Markey favors a responsible troop withdrawal from Iraq and creating tax incentives for renewable energy. Her economic plan includes doubling the child tax credit and cutting taxes on the middle class.
