Mike May

The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that Colorado House of Representatives Minority Leader Mike May (R-Parker) has abruptly announced his departure from politics. May, the Chief Financial Officer for Mars, a company that franchises Holiday Inns in Colorado and Utah says that he needs to spend more time on his day job in light of the recession.

This may be the beginning of a trend - legislators only make $30,000 a year, and Rep. Buffie McFayden is quoted as saying that some of them are already discussing not running in 2010 for financial reasons.

Republicans are now scrambling to fill two vacancies. May's Minority Leader post will likely be filled by either Assistant Minority Leader David Balmer or Minority Caucus Chairwoman Amy Stephens. No word yet on any candidates in Parker to be appointed to May's seat by a GOP vacancy committee.
