*Linda Newell has won her Colorado Senate race in the 26th district in former Republican stronghold Arapahoe County. The race was extremely tight (she won by less than 200 votes), but Newell's opponent, Lauri Clapp, has officially conceded. The win gives Democrats a 21-14 advantage in the Colorado Senate.
*Berthoud Republican State Representative Kevin Lundberg is busy staking out territory as Colorado's new useful idiot, a post previously held by Doug Bruce. Lundberg issued a demented press release on Friday questioning the validity of global warming. Previously, Lundberg has tried to pass bills in the state legislature to redefine pregnancy and eliminate domestic partnership rights for gay and lesbian couples.
*The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that Democrats in the US House of Representatives have voted to replace John Dingell as chairman of the House and Energy Committee with Henry Waxman. This could be bad news for Colorado's representation on Capitol Hill, as Denver Rep. Diana Degette was Dingell's vice chairwoman. No word yet on whether Waxman will appoint his own second-in-command, or if he'll retain Degette in that position.
*The Denver Post is reporting that Democratic US Rep. Ed Perlmutter has been named a regional whip for other congressional members from Colorado and other western states.
*After this exhausting 2008 election, I started telling everybody that I know to drug me and bury me alive if the word "2010" appeared in any of my posts. Still, I found this kind of interesting: PolitickerCo.com is reporting that Highlands Ranch lawyer David Canter has filed papers to run against Mike Coffman in 2010 in Colorado's 6th Congressional District. Canter thinks that Coffman's opponent Hank Eng got a late start this year, and he apparently does not intend to make the same mistake. Though the 6th is known as reliably Republican, it's not as hopeless as you might think. Gov. Bill Ritter carried the district in 2006, and Barack Obama carried it three weeks ago.
