Just when the Michael Jackson stories were starting to go away U.S. Representative Peter King, a Republican from New York, felt the need to bring Jackson back in the news cycle. In a recent interview Rep. King was quoted as saying that Americans need to move on from the Michael Jackson story because Jackson was a "a pervert, a child molester, he was a pedophile."
I agree with Rep. King on one point and that is that America does need to start moving on from the Michael Jackson story. As I detailed in an earlier piece the mainstream media networks are working too hard right now to try and get ratings through the celebrity death stories. Particularly harmful is the fact that the story of Iran has really lost media attention since Jackson's death.
Having said that, if Rep. King's true intention was to try to get the American public to focus away from Michael Jackson he has actually achieved the opposite effect through his comments. Rep. King's comments are now youtube sensation and constantly being run on the news cycle over other stories. How could Rep. King not realize that such strong language would become a news story in itself?
There is a very large and devoted following of Michael Jackson who will surely respond strongly to the comments. I myself took some heat from Jackson supporters for simply saying the man had done "some very wrong things." I cannot begin to imagine the sort of reaction Rep. King's comments will bring about as supporters rush to Jackson's defense. The media should send a thank you note to Rep. King for keeping a high-ratings story alive.
It is time for the debate about Jackson's life to be over. The man was a huge celebrity but now his life has passed and his body will soon be resting in the ground. If there was ever a good time to debate the actions of Jackson's life the time has passed. Rep. King is right in that America needs to start moving on to other issues. The only problem with Rep. King is that in using the language he used he has once again forced all of us to endure more Michael Jackson coverage. Other politicians should take note and refuse to provide any more quotes that can revive the story again.
