Today as a memorial service was held for the Fort Hood victims conservatives began to increasingly blame Islam for the tragedy.  While the investigation into the rampage continues and details still remain sketchy many conservatives have not hesitated in starting to place blame on someone or something.  Earlier the theme being pressed by some at Fox News was the idea that political correctness had gone too far which prevented the Army from disciplining or removing the gunman, Nidal Malik Hasan, before he went on his killing spreeRush Limbaugh then took things a step further by suggesting that the President was to blame because of his campaign promises.

Today the blame seemed to be shifting more to the religion of Islam itself rather than political correctness.  Many commentators were referring to Pat Robertson comments (video below) concerning the tragedy.  Robertson went as far as to say that Islam should not be considered a religion but instead Muslims should be treated the way we treat the members of the Communist Party or some fascist group.  Fox News also joined in by seriously proposing every Muslim soldier undergo some kind of screening simply because they are Muslim.

The military already struggles to recruit Arab translators who are vital in fighting the global war on terror as well as in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.  General Casey of the Army has warned that any Anti-Muslim backlash from the Fort Hood tragedy could cause the Army to ultimately lose its diversity.  In addition Colin Powell has consistently spoken on the need to respect Muslim soldiers.  Especially persuasive was Powell's reference to the story of a Muslim Corporal, Kareem Khan, who died in service of his country in Iraq.
