It may sound a tad negative, but sometimes parenting a teenager can feel a bit like a battle. Typical days can be filled with arguments, standoffs and constant reminders to do something…anything. And, as every good soldier knows, the most important thing to have in a battle (or on Survivor) is an ally. So what is the most important ally for a parent? Well, another parent, of course.
I can’t begin to list the number of times that being friends with the parents of my kids’ friends has been a godsend. Whether it’s getting crucial information about school matters, getting “the buzz” about which kids are partiers or sometimes just hearing something positive about your own teen. When you’ve had a long week filled with eye rolls and bad attitudes, a friend telling you that your son or daughter is polite and enthusiastic when outside the house can make it all seem worthwhile.
Forging these friendships is never a sure thing, but I’m always amazed at how sharing a carpool or seat in the bleachers can start a bond that lasts years.
