The 2010 Buick LaCrosse CX becomes the first Buck since the 1925 Buick 4 to have a four cylinder engine. In the 86 years since then, Buick has sold nothing with less than a six-cylinder engine. However, for 2010 General Motors’ direct injection Ecotec 2.4-liter four will power the Lacrosse CX.
Buick expects about 25 percent of LaCrosse buyers will opt for the four. Rated at 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque, the LaCrosse won’t be an on-ramp rocket thanks to curb weight approaching two tons. The 2009 LaCrosse weighed in with a curb weight of 3948 with the 3.0-liter V-6. The four will weigh less that than but not much.
uick notes that the Ecotec’s direct injection allows a higher compression ratio and therefore more power with less fuel and lower emissions, up to 25 percent lower emissions during cold start. However, the broad spread of the fuel economy numbers suggest that the 2.4-liter will have to work harder around town to provide day-to-day operation while rolling up larger numbers on the highway than a larger engine could hope to record.
