GM sells Hummer, saves Hummer from tight squeeze

It may not be politically correct but Hummer models do occupy a legitimate niche in the automotive spectrum. At least someone thinks so because General Motors has announced that a buyer has been found for its off-road oriented Hummer brand.
Names aren’t being named yet, but the day after entering Chapter 1, the announcement of a “memorandum of understanding” with a company willing to take on the umbrage of the Earth Liberation Front types who’ve claimed responsibility for torching the trucks at Hummer dealerships.
Which is where that loud sigh of relief comes from, along with the employees of GM’s Shreveport Assembly plant will continue to contract assemble the H3 and H3T through at least 2010. The deal saves 3,000 jobs—at least for the time being.

The Hummer H3 is based on Chevrolet/GMC full-size SUV, toughened for more extensive off-road use. The Hummer lineup also includes a smaller H2 model. It’s short or longer term fate was not included in the announcement.
"GM has developed HUMMER into a globally recognized off-road brand,” said James Taylor, HUMMER chief executive officer. “The proposed agreement will enable us to continue that growth and maximize the brand’s potential through new, innovative off-road vehicles with improved efficiency and alternative fuel powertrains. Today’s announcement is great news for HUMMER’s current and future customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe.”
Apparently no one told the ELF folks about the “around the globe” thing.
