Lamborghini unleashes Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce with highest top speed yet

Early in my career as a writer, I was told that editors love “-est” stories because the readers love them. Well, dear reader, if so, you will love the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce. It is the fastest, the quickest, most powerful, most aerodynamic, indeed the best Lamborghini ever. And dear reader, that’s a lot of “-est.”
The Murcielago is the “big Lambo,” big brother to the Gallardo, and for the limited production (350 units) LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, it has been made more powerful and its weight reduced to give it the best (that word again) power to weight ratio ever for a Murcielago. With a most impressive 5.1 horsepower per pound, the bull rips from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in a personal atmosphere sucking 3.2 second. Click a tic off for 0-60 mph.
Combine the added horsepower with the most advanced aero yet for a Murcielago and the SuperVeloce—“super fast” in Italian—wraps the needle the furthest around the dial of any Lamborghini Murcielago yet, topping out at 212 mph.
The Murcielago derives the numerical parts of its alpha-numerical designation “670” from its horsepower rating, the “4” from its all-wheel drive. And SuperVeloce is, well, it means “super fast” in Italian, translated roughly.
The horsepower comes the old fashioned way. Lambo’s engineers sharpened the valve timing and reworked the intake ports of the V-12 for an extra 30 bhp.
On the aerodynamic front—literally—the SuperVeloce has a reshaped front end, projecting the carbon-fiber front spoiler farther forward (the matte black paint for visual aerodynamics). The air intakes for the front bakes were visually emphasize and the SuperVeloce gained vents for brake ventilation. The matte black finish on the oil cooler vent on the driver’s side matches the front spoiler.
Two rear spoilers are offered. With the smaller standard spoiler the SuperVeloce lives up to its name with the 212 mph top end. With the larger fixed-angle “AeroPack” wing, the LP670-4 gains high speed stability but at some loss of top end velocity.
The big Lambo already gets a big dose of rear downforce however by its two-level carbon-fiber diffuser setup. However the most noticeable feature from behind is the “veritably noble” and flat exhaust outlet—Lamborghini’s widest. There’s that “-est” again.
In front of the rear wing, the engine cover for the V-12 is transparent polycarbonate forming hexagonal plates on three levels supported by a carbon fiber framework. Lamborghini says it aids in cooling. We say it adds in making the Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce the most visually impressive ever.

The Murcielago isn’t just a rebodied and hotrodded version of the sports car. Lamborghini went to work on the carbon fiber and steel tube frame of the SuperVeloce, recalculating the framework and using a higher-strength steel, making the frame both lighter and 12 percent stiffer. Lamborghini further lightened the SuperVeloce by even eliminating the electric motor for the movable rear wing of the standard Murcielago. A kilogram saved is acceleration gained.
The interior of the SuperVeloce was also gone over with lighter carbon fiber elements though not, says Lamborghini, at the expense of driver comfort, using Alcantera upholstery rather than leather for a few grams saved. Lamborghini squeezed mass out of the engine compartment, too, not the least of which was 57 pounds from the exhaust system alone.
All this makes the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce the ultimate Lamborghini sports car. That’s not an “est” word but it will have to do, at least until another even faster, even more “-est” Lamborghini comes along.
