Detroit Auto Show: Volvo S60 concept brings new face - and sides - to Volvo

Volvo had the unenviable time slot of the last press conference of the day, but the world premiere of the Volvo S60 concept should have drawn more than a gaggle of photographers elbowing for room at the rope line. What was shown was more than just the future of Volvo’s mainline sedan but of Volvo design in general. The deep shouldered look—at least to the extent it has been—and the “chair-shaped” taillights are out. The new look for Volvo is the double wave.
Forget the Orefors crystal center-stack/console. It’s concept car fluff and though some soft of legerdemain creating another optical-illusion floating center stack will appear in the next S60, Orefors crystal? I’ve been to the factory. You don’t want to know how much that piece of crystal-maker’s art would cost if one were to pay retail. (Volvo probably got it in exchange for the publicity Orefors will receive from it).
It’s the fender line which adds a gentle arch over each wheel that will be the next theme at Volvo, one that will show up on most if not all Volvo cars. The concept car had the usual concept car exaggerated trim details, but the inverted-U taillight shape may make the light of day, if not in the heating coil contours of the concept. The nicely integrated the Volvo grille will stay, but the extreme headlamps and lower front valence panels to be toned down as well.
And the cantilevered rear door are there as concept car novelty. They’re there as a conversation maker but primarily to open the entire side of the car for a clear view of the thin front seats (for more room inside) with the asymmetric “ponytail” slot , which is there for, well, it won’t make production.

Overall the S60 is a clean design and a needed freshening of the Volvo DNA. We expect a near-term introduction of the new design S60. Even with the contraction of Volvo’s operations and the pall of possible jettisoning by Ford, the development of the new production S60 is well underway and can’t be and shouldn’t be delayed, for the health and utter survival of Volvo. The Volvo S60 concept shows the potential for a handsome production Volvo S60. The show must go on, no matter no matter how late in the day.
