If drag racers can flaunt their quarter-mile time slips, how can hypermilers—those ballonfoots who will stop at nothing (so to speak) to eke out another hundredth of an mpg—show off their accomplishments?

Might we suggest fuelly.com. It’s a website for fuel mileage enthusiasts to record and flaunt their accomplishments, but it’s also a place to visit to find out what fuel mileage real drivers are getting in real cars in real driving conditions. It’s also a good place to go to track the mileage in your own car for fun and profit.

It’s easy enough. Establish an account for each car you want to track and then report your odometer reading and fill amount at fuelly.com and the software does the rest, not only calculating the mileage but also sharing it with the world, combining it with other drivers in the same make and model. And there are a couple of neat graphs, if you’re into that sort of thing.

And what would a website be without its own forum? Fuelly.com also has a member-powered “tips” column with advice that ranges from obvious to specious.

But if maxing your fuel economy is important to you—and it should be—tracking your performance is a good place to start. And the next time your buddy shows off his drag strip time slips, you can tell him where to go.

And that would be fuelly.com. Whatever were you thinking?
