Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super TrofeoAre you a gentleman? Maybe a professional driver? A celebrity? More importantly, how’s your schedule for six specific weekends in 2009 and, um, do you have a lot of money to spend? Like, say, €200,000 (at the moment, about $250,000 US), plus a little more for, oh, mandatory extras? And would you like to race in “the world’s fastest one-make race”?

Then do we have a car for you: Enter stage right the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo, of which only enough cars for a 30-car grid in a “showroom stock” race series for recession-proof (or at least resistant) race enthusiasts.

The Gallardo LP460-4 Super Trofeo is specially equipped for racing with a full safety cage and enough carbon fiber panels and Spartan interior to reduce the dry weight to only 1,300 kg (2866 lbs) and the chassis is specially “reworked” for racing. Pirelli will supply slick racing tires and the Super Trofeo will be equipped with an unspecified “specialist racing brake system.”

The racers will be equipped with a new engine, the “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” V10 that bumps horsepower to 570. Lamborghini has provided no specific details about the engine, but our reading of Italian is sufficient to know that it means the engine introduces Lamborghini to direct fuel injection (with the resultant stratified charge). The cars will have Lamborghini’s paddle-shifted e.gear six-speed gearbox and permanent viscous all-wheel drive.

The cars will be available only for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race series, sponsored by the Swiss watchmaker Blancpain, open to “individual professional and ‘gentleman’ drivers, as well as Lamborghini dealer teams. One (hopefully well-vetted) celebrity “guest driver” per race will be behind the wheel of a Lamborghini factory-prepared Gallardo Super Trofeo.

“Both on-track and off,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Automobili Lamborghini president and CEO, “our championship will reflect the Lamborghini brand, with extreme, high performance racing and stylish and luxurious trackside facilities. This gives our Lamborghini clients, as well as professional and gentleman racing drivers looking for a new challenge, the opportunity to experience Lamborghini in the ultimate driving environment.”

Drivers, sponsors and selected beautiful people will have access to the “Lamborghini Village,” in a luxurious paddock package.

The Bancpain Super Trofeo race series is scheduled to run in conjunction with FIA GT Championship, DTM and FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) events. The provisional schedule for 2009 includes:

May 3SilverstoneUK
May 17AdriaItaly
July 5Nuremburg's NorisringGermany
August 2SpaBelgium
September 20Barcelona's Circuit de CatalunyaSpain
October 4MonzaItaly

One or two drivers can register for each three-day race weekend which will include free practice and qualifying sessions, plus three 40-minute races on Saturday and Sunday. No modifications will be allowed to the cars, but no extra weight (“success ballast”) will be added to the faster drivers’ cars. It’s run what you brung, as long as you brung a totally stock Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo. The total cost will include a €200,000 car and parts package, plus tax and entry fee.

So limber up that checkbook, or perhaps polish your celebrity status, and join us on the grid at Silverstone on May 3.
Well, we are a celebrity, aren’t we?
