   Caution:  Garage Sale!

Caution! Garage sale season is in full swing this summer.  Here are some tips I’ve gathered to make your garage sale a financial success!

Garage sales are meant to be fun while helping people find great bargains.  When planned right, they can be a win-win event.  You win by clearing clutter; extra, unwanted or unused items and your buyers win by getting things they want on sale and stretching their budgets.

Clear the clutter and turn it into some cash!

When is it time to have a garage sale?

  • Your house is too cluttered
  • You have a lot of unused items
  • You have lots of clothes not being worn by your or your kids
  • You need money to pay bills
  • Your house looks like this -->

Toss your garbage and sell the "Good Stuff"

What should you sell?

From the shopper's point of view, the more you offer of certain items in the sale, the more likely they are to buy.  But which ones?

  • Furniture
  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Jewelry
  • Sports Equipment
  • Pots and Pans - Kitchen Items - Silverware
  • Baby Items
  • Michael Jackson Memorabilia!

Take the extra time to lay out your items

Display your wares to attract more offers!

  • Group like items together
  • Keep valuables close to you for security purposes
  • Don't bunch the items too closely
  • Put high end and fragile items on tables / bulkier items on the lawn or driveway
  • Set your prices a little high in anticipation of lower offers
  • Be ready to bargain!
  • Take everything out of your boxes and bags so they are visable - some people are uncomfortable going through your things

This is a great sign - EASY TO READ!

Advertising, advertising, advertising!

Advertising is your best tool for getting those shoppers to your sale.  It's your most important tool for a profitable sale.

  • Advertise in the paper
  • Advertise on garage sale dedicated sites like GarageSalesTracker
  • Put signs up around the neighborhood - make sure they are large enough to read, written clearly and have the dates & times of your sale on them.  Be a good neighbor and take them down after your sale
  • Putting together a neighborhood sale will increase the hype and attract more buzz
