How far would you go to save a co-worker's job?
Recently, the company I work for, a small family-atmosphere office, deeply affected by the economic recession, made the announcement no employee wants to hear. We held an office meeting and discussed that a 35% pay cut would be required. The meeting was on a Friday and each of us went home to discuss options with our families - mainly what our new schedules would be given the reduced hours.
On Monday, one of the employees, pregnant, announced that she was leaving the company early (she'd planned on leaving in August to stay at home with her baby). This meant that the pay cut was less severe for the rest of us. It was an altruistic act that I'm not sure I would have done for someone else.
Would you volunteer to cut your hours if it meant a co-worker wouldn't lose their job? Would it matter who was going to be laid off? What is the best way to spread the pain of decreased funds to fulfill overhead/payroll obligations? Or is laying off one or two people better than the whole staff facing pay cuts? What has your company done? What's been your experience?
